Seattle Didn’t Belong in the Playoffs, but Nobody Told Them
The Seattle Seahawks didn’t belong in the playoffs, but nobody told them. So… Seattle beat the previous year’s Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints over the weekend and advanced in the NFL Playoffs. It was a great game and the biggest upset the NFL has seen in many years. But I think we should all be upset about something else.
Seattle reaching the playoffs is considered to be a big upset because most of the football experts said they didn’t deserve to be there. Why not? Because their record was only 7-9 for the season and they thought it was ridiculous that a sub .500 team got a home game and a chance to participate in the playoffs.
Now before I lose too many of you with my football mumbo-jumbo, stay with me. The basic truth is that nobody expected Seattle to play well and nobody would have been surprised if New Orleans had beaten them mercilessly. BUT, Seattle thought differently.
It doesn't matter what other people think, it matters what YOU think.Has anybody ever thought you didn’t deserve an opportunity that you were given? And did they have correspondingly low expectations for you in your new role or business opportunity?
I think this ‘stunner’ serves to remind us that what people say is way less important than what we believe about ourselves. Are you allowing anyone’s low expectations of you to limit your goals for your life? Are you ready to step up and create an ‘upset’ of your own? Good! Tell me about it in the comment box.
Just today I had a “friend” tell me to drop a dream I have in pursing a nursing degree because I have “too much” going on in my life right now and maybe I should just forget about it – even though I have shared with her my success in the prerequisite classes I had to take while still having “too much” going on. It’s very disappointing because for a moment – I actually thought about it

First, I am just utterly over the moon to meet a fellow Football goddess!!
I too, was routing for the Seahawks and saw the lesson in Attitude and Belief that was demonstrated when they won.
And even though they didn’t go much further, the energy and boost from that win is almost guaranteed to carry into a much more successful season next year.
(if there IS a 2011 season, that is!)

Great point, Allegra. Many sports teams will actually use their perceived “underdog” status as motivation to perform better and ultimately succeed. Everyone receives the same negative stimuli, but how one handles it defines one’s ultimate success.
